Finding his mother's given name

Recently I was part of a very moving experience.

A man, now 74 years old, lost his father during WWII
and his mother in 1946.
He knew his own name, but only remembered his
mother as Mom.
Despite many efforts in his native country, it was
impossible to find the mother's given name, because
in that country married women, even today, are often
referred to as Mrs. John Smith, if I should use a common
English name as an example. So when the mother
died in 1946, that was how she was registered.
No given name.
It was very frustrating!

Thanks to a woman I met in Frankfurt, I heard about
a pilot project where images of the marriage registers
for that city were recently put online.

Five hours of search yielded the result I had hoped
for - at the age of 74 this man now finally knows the name
of his mother, her exact birthdate, the names of
her parents and the witnesses at their wedding.

It felt good!

Path of Life

If I ever get to that part of the world, I would like to
visit the Path of Life garden in Windsor, Virginia.

The idea behind the garden and the themes
represented there feel relevant to my own life just now.

Take a little look at this

Afterwards you can use Flickr or Google to find other
photos from this amazing place.

Here is a map of the garden

Looking forward to see this little lady in July

Gothic script

Aftenposten is Norway's biggest newspaper.
This year it is celebrating 150 years.
I have grown up with this newspaper - in addition
to the Swedish Dagens Nyheter and the local
newspaper.
Therefore, the Gothic letters became somewhat
familiar to my eye.

Sometimes I read old documents written in Gothic
script.
I always feel reading that script is a little easier for
me because of the logo of Aftenposten!

May 17th - in Wisconsin

From Stoughton, Wisconsin

PS. Don't tell and don't smell:
According to the young lady's mom, this photo shows
a patriotic lady with a very full diaper.

Baking a cake for Norway's National Day May 17th?

My mother's 17. mai cake was delicious!

"Askefast" is "ashstuck"

New situations. New words.

When I flew back from Frankfurt, I was sitting next
to a group of friends who had been walking in Northern
Italy. Last Sunday they were supposed to fly back from
Milano, but found themselves "askefast".

No planes left Milano that day because of ashes from
faraway Iceland. They also told me that the airport in
Munich was closed that same day.

So looking for a solution to get home, they boarded a train
from Milano to Frankfurt!

The group of friends said that for their next trip abroad
in Europe they would now consider using Interrail to avoid
being "askefast" once more.

"Askefast" - a useful word for the future?

Chinese garden in Frankfurt

A friend brought me to this oasis in Frankfurt -
a Chinese garden inside a park.

A quiet space in a buzzling city.

More of my favorite water sculpture by Carl Nesjar

All these photos were taken around eight at night.

That morning I had seen two workers at the dry and
cleaned up sculpture made by Carl Nesjar .

That evening, going for a walk, I saw that the water was on!

Carl Nesjar: The water is on again!

A swing in spring

A swing in spring.
What do you do?

You swing!

You swing some more.
Fun!

Grandma is coming to see this with her own eyes in July.
