A troll I inherited

Among the many interesting people I have been
blessed to meet in my life, was a man whose life
had been a series of events nobody could have
imagined.

When he died, his close friends gave his few possessions away.
They gave me this Norwegian troll that used to stand in
his little home.
I look at the troll and remember his presence.
His personality.
His life.

Qoute from an elderly relative

"Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken
als ein Schrecken ohne Ende."

Perhaps to be translated as
"Better a horrible end than horror without end."

My career as an icicle fighter

About a week ago I spent several days "fighting" icicles.
Those beautiful creations can be a real hazard for people on
the ground, so both at work and at home I used long sticks
to get them down.
In Norway it is the houseowner's responsibility to get
them down, but I didn't wait for that.

The icicles give a very special sound when they break.
Nearly like music.

PS. I don't think that was the reason for my present back pain.

Discovering back pain

Yes.
Yesterday at work I felt pain in my lower back.
It got so bad, I had to go home.

Now it is hard to sit.
Hard to stand.
Hard to lie down.

Till now, my back has served me well. Thanks!

I hope I will find a way to get out of the present
situation as soon as possible, and then prevent
back problems in the future.

Time out

Just a short message to those who wonder why I am so quiet:
I am unpacking all those 23 boxes I sent to myself,
refiling and looking for more bookshelves.
And then there is my regular job....

Qoute for some days in the coming year

"The holiest of all holidays are those kept
by ourselves in silence and apart:
the secret anniversaries of the heart."

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

One year old

My first birthday party on Skype

Last night four generations joined to celebrate Kate's
first birthday.
Grandma and greatgrandma here in Norway.
Kate and her parents in the States.

The birthday girl herself was a little drowsy after
having had one of her naps, but her spirits improved
as the party went on, and particularly after the
entertainment part with Sesam Street and songs
she knows.

She was seated in front of the camera, dressed up
with a birthday-crown on her head.

A specially made strawberrycake was brought to the table.
Greatgrandma saw that the cake was adorned with the
chocolate letters she had sent "Gratulerer Kate 1 år".

We sang birthday-songs in at least four different languages.

We all marvelled how this little girl has learnt so much
during the last year, and how much joy she gives us.

Grandma and Greatgrandma had earlier gone out for
a festive meal, and had their own cake here in Norway.
But we sure would have liked to taste Cheryl's cake too!

All in all, we felt it was a real miracle that Skype helped us
celebrate Kate's birthday this way!

Inspiration from a photo

This was also something from my midtwenties and my
European art tour.
I remember finding this photo, in a travel brochure I think,
and then "seeing" different persons in the stone
formations.

It was an unexpected and interesting experience.

Haag in my midtwenties

In my midtwenties I was travelling around Europe in
a minivan, visiting art museums with an
artist who was my boyfriend at the time.

I must have felt some inspiration in this environment,
because I did some art work.
These three were done in Haag, the Netherlands.

We drove by a new quarter with brandnew, tall,
monsterous buildings, and saw one little old house
still there. Three of the apartments in that old
house had been abandoned - there were bricks in the windows.
But the fourth apartment had a painted door, curtains, flowers
in the windows and flowers outside. A wellkept lawn.
Who were the people living in that little house?
How long were they able to hold out?

Living in a minivan, meant we felt the weather much closer
than in a regular home. When it rained and was windy,
the metal of the car became like a second skin.

PS. What I remember from that trip was that I did not feel
comfortable sleeping in the minivan on the streets.
From my "good-girl" point of view, we should either have
paid for a spot at a camping site or gotten a special permission
from the owners of the land we parked on.
Well, it turned out the Dutch law said something
along those lines, so on our last night in the Netherlands,
the police showed up and told us to find a camping site -
for the next night.

My own first birthday

When I was sorting out many of the boxes with my stuff
in my other country a little more than a week ago,
I found this birthday card. It was written to me by
Tant Karin on my first birthday. I have already told about this
"adopted" aunt in my blog.

Wasn't it strange how this card has followed me through
so many places in a fairly whole long life and now
should turn up just before Kate's first birthday and
have a printed text in English?

Another present

I had a box for teabags I liked.
The possibility to chose among different kinds of tea
appeals to me.

As I was bringing this box from my other country to
Norway, I asked my friend O. if she could paint on the front of the box.
She did, and here is the result.

A present

My friend D. has been working in ceramics for years.
This was the present I got this time.
I lit it tonight and just enjoyed it.
Thanks D.!

Just in a good mood

Weird doodle

I did this back in 1977 and just rediscovered it among the
thousands of pieces of paper I sifted through.

According to the Wikipedia
A doodle is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a
person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings
that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract
shapes.

What was I thinking?

The mental block of going out

Since I came back to Moss on Wednesday I have not
been to the supermarket.
I have eaten whatever I could find in my kitchen cupboards.

But now I should go to buy some food.
I will tell you how it was when I come back.

Report:
The outside temperature is between minus 10 C to
minus 14 C, depending if you are in the shadow or in the sun.

It actually is a very sunny day with a blue sky!

I left my warmest mittens at work, so the ones I used
definitely left something to be desired.
The scarf and the fleece cap was a great help.

In short, the main problem was the mental block of
going out.

PS. The strong sunlight reflecting on the snow, in some
strange way reminds me of the special strong sunlight
around the Mediterranean.

Congratulations,Kate!

For one year we have had the pleasure to follow,
most of the time from quite a distance,
this wonderful little girl.
My granddaughter Kate.
The baby that one year ago made me a grandmother.

Now she is celebrating her first birthday.
She looks like a real big girl that has
learnt a lot in the last twelve months.

Hope to see you in person in July, Kate!

In the meantime there are all the photos to enjoy,
and the Skype calls for connections.

What a blessing Kate is!

WOW!

On Monday morning I was standing in a small rural post office in my
other country with 23 boxes I wanted to send to Norway.
The price was stiff, and the clerk warned me she would have to send
it in two batches, as the postvan could not accomodate all the boxes at once.

Today the postman delivered 13 of the boxes at my door here in Moss - three days later!
Good job!

22 hours later

Outside: Minus 14 degrees Celsius

Despite trying to heat up my apartment by closing doors
and putting my radiators on maximum, I am still not where
I want to be.

Office: 18 degrees C
Living room: Around 16 degrees C, depending where
you are in the room
Kitchen: 11 degrees C

So now I am taking down the radiator from the attic to improve
the situation.

Sad news:
In our nearby town Sarpsborg a man in his forties was found dead outside.
The police thinks he froze to death. The first victim this winter.
According to the news, he had recently returned to Norway from a longer stay abroad.
He was not dressed like you should be in this weather - no cap, no mittens, no winter boots.
Dressing right is the key to staying alive.

What a change!

Back in Moss.
Outside: Minus 14 degrees Celsius and snow.
Inside : 10 degrees Celsius! Brrrrrr.....
My radiators are now working full speed to change that.

At least it is a sunny day with a light blue sky.

Now I am going to sleep for a few hours after travelling the whole night.

Back in town.

At the airport in Oslo it was minus 23 degrees Celsius.

I am thankful Moss is among the warmest versions of Norway.

From one of my countries to the other

Tonight I will be flying back to Norway after
a two week visit to my other country.

It has been a visit full of assigments and hard work.
23 boxes with books and documents are on their way to Norway.
Did I chose the most important books?
Did I send the most relevant documents?

I will have to think about this later.
